What is Tiny Home Living?

I'm sure by now you've heard of the "Tiny Home" movement. With all of the TV shows and publicity, it's pretty hard to ignore. In honor of the Tiny Home Jamboree Trade Show our staff will be attending this month, we would like to take a deeper dive into this untraditional trend.

For those who are not familiar with this trend, here is a little more information. Those who advocate for Tiny Home Living say that it is about more than just living in a tiny home, it is about embracing the lifestyle.

tiny living encompasses: tiny houses, life simplification, environmental consciousness, self sufficiency, sound fiscal plans and life adventures

There are a specific demographic of people who identify with the Tiny Home Living phenomenon. Many of them alighn with the below demographics.

There are some who believe that this trend is on it's way out. According to research from Zillow, more homeowners are seeking bigger, more expensive homes, especially Millennials. Census data also shows that the median square footage of new homes has increased from 2000 sq. ft. to about 2,500 sq. ft. since the year 2000.

Many credit the most recent real estate crisis with reviving the Tiny Home Living trend, but throughout history, there have always been a population of people who desired to live life on a smaller scale. While there were those who's mantra was bigger was definitely better, there were always those who believed a life with less possessions would bring them more of what they desired. Think about it, Henry David Thoreau had his 150 sq ft. cottage at Walden Pond and Laura Ingles Wilder had her Little House on the Prairie. Maybe this Tiny Home Living trend is not a new "trend" at all, it could be that it is simply a new way to fulfill an old human desire.
