FAQs and How-To’s for Beginners
What is a caulking gun?
A caulking gun is a tool that holds a tube or cartridge filled with a caulk or sealant. Caulk guns include mechanisms like a metal plate and pressure rod that apply force to the base of an open caulk tube so that the caulk or sealant is able to flow out. Whether you are needing to replace the sealant around the bathtub or shower, caulk your windows, doors, and trim or repair small holes in drywall, using a caulk gun can help you complete your project easily and efficiently. For smaller caulking projects another option can be using a sealant that comes in a squeeze tube.

How to remove a caulk/sealant tube or cartridge from a caulk gun.
Removing a caulk/sealant tube or cartridge from a Red Devil® caulk gun is easy. Slightly depress the metal tab on the back of the caulk gun. This will push down on the spring. While holding the metal tab down, grab the ladder hook and pressure rod (the curved piece of metal rod that extends out the back of the caulk gun) and pull it back to the point where it no longer is holding the tube in place. Release the metal tab, and simply lift the tube out of the caulk gun.
Tips for rotating caulk guns: To remove a caulk or sealant cartridge from a rotating caulk gun rotate the barrel of the gun so that the widest opening is facing upward. This will prevent the caulk or sealant tube from falling to the ground.
Tips for ratchet caulk guns: Ratchet caulk guns often do not have the metal push tabs at the back of the caulk gun. For this type of caulk gun simply turn the pressure rod so that side with the serrations is facing upward. This will allow you to easily pull the pressure rod back to remove the caulk or sealant cartridge.
How to load a caulk/sealant tube or cartridge in a caulk gun.
Loading a caulk/sealant tube or cartridge from a Red Devil® caulk gun is simple. Slightly depress the metal tab on the back of the caulk gun. This will push down on the spring. While holding the metal tab down, pull the ladder hook and pressure rod (the curved piece of metal rod that extends out the back of the caulk gun) back so that there is enough room to place the caulk cartridge in the barrel of the caulk gun. Release the metal tab and insert the cartridge into the barrel of the caulk gun. Once again press the metal tab at the back of the caulk gun and move the ladder hook and pressure rod forward until it is pressed firmly against the base of the cartridge and can’t extend further.
Tips for rotating caulk guns: To load a caulk or sealant cartridge in a rotating caulk gun rotate the barrel of the gun so that the widest opening is facing upward. This will position the barrel so that you can easily load the caulk or sealant tube.
Tips for ratchet caulk guns: Ratchet caulk guns often do not have the metal push tabs at the back of the caulk gun. For this type of caulk gun simply turn the pressure rod so that the side with the serrations is facing upward. This will allow you to easily pull the pressure rod back to load the caulk or sealant cartridge.
How does a Drip Free™ caulk gun work?
A Drip Free™ caulk gun automatically releases the pressure from the caulk tube or cartridge. The Drip Free™ caulk guns have a spring-loaded metal plate that locks the pressure rod in place when you release the trigger of the caulk gun. As you continue to squeeze the trigger, the pressure bar and metal plate slightly releases and allows the pressure bar to move and discharge the caulk or sealant.
